The objective of these services is to test by different methods to certain properties of materials that cannot be determined by other means such as visual examination or direct measurement. Since the material tested will later be used in actual service, the testing methods must in no way destroy them. The results of the tests are compared with the contractual specifications and / or the applicable codes and standards.
Field of Applications
Non-Destructive Testing can be performed on a number of different materials but are required mainly for testing metallic parts such as forgings, casting, and welds of fabricated structures, pressure vessels, boilers, pipelines, storage tanks, ships, and offshore platforms. Critically, stressed components such as pressure vessels, boilers, and parts for aircraft, in which imperfection could lead to accidents, failure in service or reduce efficiency. For example, metal casting and forging, tubes, and piping, and especially the welds between components, are tested to ensure that they do not contain potentially dangerous irregularities and flaws. Other tests are made to check corrosion properties such as electrical or thermal insulation, and possible leakage of liquid and gases.
